Cleanse and Tone with Thera-skin
Posted by Megan on 4/29/2013 to Promotions

When you don't take care of your skin it shows—flaky, dry skin will occur, skin will appear dull, and breakouts will surface. It can be hard to find skin care products that are not full of parabens and other yucky stuff that actually works against your best efforts to care for your skin. At Escents, we've mastered a unique line of skincare called "Thera-skin"—these all natural skin care products work to restore and reveal the true beauty and potential of your skin. This month we are offering a special of buy a cleanser and get a toner for 25% in-store and 20% off toners and cleansers online to get you on your way to glowing skin!

Cleansing is one of the most important steps to skin care because not only does it remove dirt, oil and makeup; it prepares the skin for the next steps of your skin care routine so it accepts your toner and moisturizer more efficiently. We have a wide variety of cleansers that suit any skin type from oily to mature. Click here to view our line of Thera-skin Cleansers.

Toner is often the forgotten part of the skin care regime. This is usually because it is misunderstood and considered unimportant. However, toning is a vital part of taking care of your skin because it exfoliates and restores the PH balance of the skin which prevents bacteria from harming the delicate nature of the epidermis. It also removes any excess residue or oil from the skin before moisturizing so it is not trapped under the moisturizer which can cause breakouts! Escents is proud to announce the launch of four new Eau de Parfums— Courage, Hope, Joy and Grace! Each unique scent was crafted to reflect the unique and complex side of a woman as well as what she inspired in others. In combination with this exclusive launch, Escents is joining forces with the Salvation Army and their “Truth Isn’t Sexy” campaign in the fight against Human Trafficking by donating 10% of the profits from the new Eau de Parfums to the cause. The Salvation Army is commited to human trafficking victims and the restoration of their freedom, dignity and self-respect. The Salvation Army creates awareness and education about human trafficking as well as funding a safe house called “Deborah’s Gate”. Deborah’s Gate is in Vancouver and is dedicated to helping victims of human trafficking recover and get back on their feet and into society. These people (mostly women) have suffered immense trauma due to sexual, physical, emotional and/or psychological violence in their lives as a result of sexual exploitation. Below are some alarming facts about the Human Trafficking industry.

•There are an estimated 27 million slaves worldwide

•250,000 sex slaves exist in North America, many of them in Vancouver, BC

•25%-80% of those sold into slavery are under the age of 24, some as young as 6

•Currently only 1-2% of victims are rescued

In addition to donating 10% of the profits of the new Eau de Parfums, we will also be asking customers to donate a $1.00 to help fund the Salvation Army’s efforts to end this awful industry that continues to grow and make money off of innocent people.

The Eau de Parfums contains 100% pure essential oils and naturally derived aromas, DPG and Phthalate free, biodegradable, no parabens, no animal testing, and no synthetic colour. They are all natural; containing essential oils alcohol and water:

Joy – Inspired by a Woman’s joy and the joy she brings to others! A passionate scent with the top notes of floral Violet and uplifting Jasmine.

Hope- An uplifting scent that reflects the hope that every woman possesses. Indulgent with the top notes of Vanilla and Bergamot.

Grace-A balanced scent which is grounded yet complex, like the Grace of a Woman. Mingles the top notes of Lily and Cedarwood.

Celebrate Spring
Posted by Megan on 3/26/2013 to Promotions

The days are getting longer and the sun is starting to peak from the clouds. Even though it takes a bit longer in Canada to feel the true warmth of the season—spring is in fact here! At Escents, we love everything about spring because it acts as a reminder of all of the wonderful things that nature has to offer! To celebrate our deep love for this change in season, we have created four beautiful scents that reflect four of the most fragrant spring flowers Hyacinth, Narcissus, Lilac and one of our CEO’s favourite—Tuberose.  The scents come in four products—a fragrant Aroma Blend, skin-softening Organic Argan Bath Oil, a delicate Aroma/body Mist and tiny Aroma Beads for scenting those special places in your home.

Romantic and luxurious.  An exotic blend of heady Tuberose and sweet Ylang Ylang.

Rich and intoxicating with notes of blooming Neroli and honeyed Tagetes.

Hyacinth blends with Rose to create a welcoming scent reminiscent of spring.

Transcendent and uplifitng. Heliotrope and Jasmine combine to create this timeless scent.

The Bath Oil is made with organic Argan oil which softens, hydrates and boasts anti-aging effects from high levels of Vitamin E and antioxidants. Unlike regular bath oils this one blends into the bath water creating a light, aromatic foam that is not drying to the skin. Skin is left soft and restored. Each bottle comes with a hang tag made out of seed paper which can be planted in your garden or a pot! Here’s how to plant your hang tag:

1. Chose a container that is about 4" wide and 5" tall. Try using recycled cans or jars!
2. Drill a few holes in the bottom so when you water the plant it will have drainage.
3. Place the seed paper in a pot under a thin layer of soil
4. Water thoroughly and keep moist
5. Place in a sunny corner and watch it bloom

Let us in on some of your secret gardening tips and what your favourite flowers are for spring! We want to hear from you:)

Natural Headache Relief
Posted by Megan on 2/25/2013 to Promotions

Most people seek relief from a headache by reaching for their favourite pain killer—from aspirin to acetaminophen and even naproxen sodium. At Escents Aromatherapy we believe that natural headache relief can be mastered by using the special blend of essential oils that make up our Headache Relief Roll-on. Made with Lavender and Peppermint then blended in an all natural Jojoba oil base, this tiny roll-on can be used as an easy, pill free go-to when your next headache strikes. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: For immediate relief, rub the oil on the temples and massage slowly in a circular motion.

Step 2: Roll on the back of the neck and massage into the neck muscles.

Step 3: For time released pain relief, roll the oil on the bottom of the feet. The skin is thicker on this area, which allows the essential oils to enter the system more slowly than the rest of the body.

The Headache Relief Roll-on also provides relief for the following:

  • nausea
  • cold/flu
  • mental fatigue

All of Escents wellness products are all natural, phthalate and dpg free, no artifical colours and made with 100% pure essential oils. For a limited time, spend $85 on the web and get a FREE Headache Relief Roll-on. (offer varies in-store.)

The Benefits of Grass Oils
Posted by Shay Sinclair-Product Specialist on 2/25/2013 to Aromatherapy 101

The last of the essential oil families is also one of the most varied. Acting as a catch-all for oils that don’t quite make it into the other families, the ‘herbs and grasses’ family still has some of the best oils available for a wide range of uses. Rosemary, oregano, basil, and the mints are all herbs, while lemongrass, citronella (a cultivar of lemongrass), and palmarosa are useful grasses.

Herb oils are pungent and tend to smell much like the herbs we use in the kitchen, making them easy to recognize. Many – particularly rosemary and the mints – have the same ‘feel’ in the lungs as tree oils, and are equally fantastic for allergies, colds, and the flu.  Grasses are also strong (use them sparingly!) and tend to have a citrusy, resinous scent – sweet and sharp like lemon, but heavy and earthy like patchouli. If that sounds like a contradiction, spend some time sniffing citronella; it smells like a blend all on its own!

Most herbs can be used like tree oils. In addition to quieting coughs and clearing congestion, these oils are also antibacterial and great for sore muscles and poor circulation.

Grasses also have a stimulating effect on circulation, but their most popular use is in bug repellents. Citronella candles are the most famous option, but diffusing our Zap Away blend (including citronella and lemongrass) is a potent and wallet-friendly option. A few drops of Zap Away on windowsills can also help deter creepy-crawlies from making your house their home.

Although herbs and grasses can be too potent to diffuse on their own, most of these oils blend fabulously with citrus or tree oils. Citrus-herb blends (like our Green Forest and Summer) are particularly great at encouraging energy and focus while working and studying, or for cutting through unpleasant odors.

We hope our series on essential oil families has helped demystify things for everyone reading! There’s still a whole world of single oils to explore, but a solid grounding in oil families cuts the work in half.

Next time you visit us, spend some time smelling oils and guessing their families. We look forward to seeing you there!

10 Natural Hair Care Secrets from Around the World
Posted by Jen MacDonald on 1/18/2013 to Promotions
Hair Care Secrets

We were really inspired by nature when we created our natural hair care collection, so to celebrate this; we thought we’d share some other hair care secrets from around the world!

1. In Columbia, eggs and avocado are mixed together to make an ultra moisturizing hair mask. Leave it on for 15mins and wash and condition as usual; revealing soft silky hair.

2. Italian women keep their hair glossy by using a mixture of yogurt and olive oil as a deep conditioner a few times a month.

3. The people of Morocco use Vitamin E rich Moroccan oil to lock in moisture and improve hair’s elasticity and shine.

4. Coconut oil is used in South Asia as a hair mask to make hair silky and shiny. It also, helps the hair become stronger and less brittle.

5. The Spanish use this “juicy” secret to keep their locks looking brilliant. After shampooing, mix ¼ cup of cranberry juice with ¼ cup of water and rinse the hair. If you’re blond, lemon juice can be used to add extra highlights!

6. The hot climate in India can be extremely damaging to the hair. To restore shine, Indian women use hibiscus leaves and water as a shampoo—it also creates a lovely cooling sensation for the scalp!

7. To create strong manageable strands, Polish women mix egg yolks with castor oil and lemon juice and leave it on the hair for 15mins, then rinse.

8. In Argentina, the juice from Aloe Vera leaves is rubbed into the scalp to keep it moisturized and free of flakes.

9. Countries such as Belgium and Germany, swear by rinsing the hair with cold beer to make hair bouncy and full of body!

10. This natural, yet smelly ritual might surprise you! In the Czech Republic, onion peel is prepared to make a hair elixir that will dye hair a golden hue.

Paraben and Sulfate Free Hair Care
Posted by Shay Sinclair-Product Specialist on 1/16/2013 to Wellness

You might have heard the news: our shampoos and conditioners are now free of parabens and sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS). If you’re scratching your head, or if you know that getting rid of those ingredients is a good idea but aren’t quite sure why, read on!

Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives, mostly in products like shampoo, lotion, and liquid soap. Because parabens are cheap and effective – no moldy lotion here! – they’re used in most commercial products. That is, they were; over the previous decade, serious doubts have been raised about the long-term safety of using products containing them.

Like many other chemicals, parabens can mimic estrogen under the right conditions. We know introducing estrogen into the body can be dangerous (hence the discontinuation of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women), and several studies back up this concern. High levels of parabens (of the type found in skincare products) were discovered in breast cancer tumours, and up to 60 per cent of breast cancer tumours occur in the area closest to where deodorant is applied.

These studies were small, and more research is needed. However, switching to paraben-free products where available is an easy way to play it safe with your health.

SLS is a slightly different story. There isn’t enough research to say it’s unsafe, but the evidence we have indicates that switching to SLS-free products might be a good idea, particularly for anyone with sensitive skin.

As a surfactant, SLS provides the foaming, cleaning power found in all kinds of liquid washes – like shampoo, bubble bath, and body wash. In its pure form SLS is a strong skin and respiratory irritant, but in the miniscule dilutions found in most products it was thought to be harmless.

Unfortunately, many people using SLS products have reported painful or irritating reactions: eczema, dandruff, acne, and skin sensitivity can all be caused by a relaxing bubble bath. At the very least, SLS strips the skin and hair of important nutrients and protective oils.

One debunked claim is that SLS can cause cancer. Thankfully, no reputable scientific studies have shown any link thus far.

There are a lot of claims floating around about parabens and SLS, and a lot of hyperbole on both sides. In the end, there just isn’t enough information to make the call, but switching to products free of these chemicals is an easy way to err on the side of caution.

Exercise:
It can be hard, but to be healthy and vital, one must get their body moving. Getting enough sleep is a necessary part of health and well-being. Without enough rest, our bodies become tired and susceptible to bacteria and infection—not to mention having low energy! Getting the body ready for sleep is an important part of any sleep routine—aromatherapy can work wonders for this. Products such as our Sleep Aroma Mist can be sprayed on the pillow and on the sheets before getting into bed. The essential oils of Chamomile and Ylang Ylang help to reduce tension and set the mind at ease so you can peacefully drift off to the Land of Nod.

Escents Gifts Under Your Tree!
Posted by Shay Sinclair-Product Specialist on 12/17/2012 to Promotions

Giving the perfect gift is such a joy – there’s nothing like seeing a loved one’s face light up on Christmas day. Finding those gifts, on the other hand, involves much less joy and much more stress. Buying one of our beautiful gift sets can make holiday shopping a little easier, so we’ve put together some great ideas that will help you save your money for the next name on your list. For this week only (December 18th to the 24th) we'll be offering our gifts at an extra 20% off (offer varies in-store). Click here to browse our gift collection.

Whether picking something up for your mother, best friend, or just a secret Santa at work, here are a few tips for making the right choice:

•Citrus scents, like our top seller Rejuvenating, tend to go over well with everyone, as do neutral blends like our oakmoss-and-bergamot Breeze.

•Unless you know that grandma is wild for roses, stay clear of heavier floral blends. More than any other oil family, floral oils are often a love-it-or-hate-it scent.

•When choosing diffuser oils, keep in mind that citruses and fresh scents like pine are the best at clearing unpleasant odors and opening up small spaces, while floral or ‘foodie’ scents create a cozy, romantic, or reassuring atmosphere.

•If your gift recipient has sensitive skin, lavender and other floral products are soothing and unlikely to cause irritation.

•For those with scent sensitivities, citrus oils are often a safe bet – citrus oils are harvested by squeezing the citrus rind, so it’s much like the scent from cutting open a fresh orange or lemon!

The Benefits of Using an Ultrasonic Diffuser
Posted by Shay Sinclair-Product Specialist on 12/10/2012 to Promotions

There are as many ways to scent a home as there are rooms in a house. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to know which option is best, but there’s an easy answer: ultrasonic diffusers, also known as ultrasonic nebulizers.

If you’ve visited our stores you’ve likely seen them gently misting the air, and you might have also seen them in spas, yoga studios, or other places dedicated to focus and relaxation. That’s because ultrasonic diffusers are the best, and easiest, way to enjoy the benefits of pure essential oils.

The diffusers – which act as miniature humidifiers – suspend the oil in a cool water vapor, scenting your home from 5 to 8 hours depending on the model. (Each use only requires water and 5 drops of oil, giving you 72 uses from a 15ml bottle! ) ‘Cool’ is the key word –most methods of home scenting heat the oil until it evaporates, destroying much of its healing properties. Ultrasonic diffusers, on the other hand, preserve all the benefits of the oils.

Like all humidifiers, ultrasonic diffusers also clean the air. When suspended water condenses on dust or pollen in the air, it weighs the dust down until it reaches the floor, where it can be vacuumed up instead of breathed in. The double punch of increased humidity and cleaner air makes this a particularly great choice for anyone suffering from respiratory problems, particularly allergies.

While your ultrasonic diffuser should last you many happy years, it does require regular cleaning. Thankfully, cleaning it couldn’t be easier! Just mix rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle, spray the mixture into the empty water well a few times, then wipe with a paper towel. The rubbing alcohol will help dissolve any essential oils that have gummed up in the mechanism, as well as readying the diffuser for a new blend.

Because of their delicate machinery our diffusers start at $54.95, but this week, (December 11th to 17th) our diffusers are 20% off the regular price! They make great gifts for anyone on your Christmas list!

My Canada-Maritimes
Posted by megan on 11/7/2012 to Promotions

The Maritime region of Canada is made up of of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador.  This beautiful area consists of lush, rolling hills, sandy beaches and quaint fishing villages. The economy relies on  industries such as  fishing, agriculture, forestry and coal mining. The rich history of the Maritimes is one that cannot be forgotten; from French explorers settling the area which would later be called Acadie to numerous wars that took place for almost a century between the French and the British (1689-1763). This region has a deep rooted history, which goes far beyond lobster rolls and Celtic music!

In honor of the Maritime region in Canada, Escents created a scent that is reflective of the deep seeded traditions and culture. The blend infuses traditional, earthy Frankincense with citrusy Bergamot creating a soft unwinding scent. To learn more about the entire Maritime Collection, click here.

Thera-skin-Anti-Aging Regime in 5 Easy Steps:
Posted by megan on 10/22/2012 to Aromatherapy 101

Step 1: Start by cleansing your skin with Thera-skin’s Multi-Vitamin Purifying Face Wash. This delicate, creamy wash combines Soy, Avocado and Evening Primrose which gently lifts away dirt and makeup without over drying and depleting the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Squeeze a small amount onto fingertips and gently lather onto face, rinse and pat dry.

Step 2: Tone your skin with Thera-skin’s Visibly Moist Toner. Infused with natural sugars, hydrating panthenol, and a biocompatible copper complex scented with deliciously fragrant lavender and rose essential oils. Sprits over the face after cleansing or apply to a cotton ball and rub over face and neck. Toning is a very important step in any skin care regime because it works to close the pores after cleansing. If the pores are left open, moisture can leave the skin and lead to dehydration.

Step 3: Apply the Age-Limit Advanced Refinishing Serum to toned skin AM/PM or once a day. This product contains line erasing AHAs that work to gently exfoliate dead skin cells that can bond and produce fine lines. Once these skin cells are exfoliated, new skin cells will grow, diminishing the look of fine lines.

Step 4: After applying the Age-Limit Advanced Refinishing Serum, moisturize with one of the Thera-skin moisturizers. By using a moisturizer that is best suited for your skin type, you can target your anti-aging regime to your skin’s specific needs. Use the Continuous Moisture Crème for dry, dehydrated skin, Moisture Replenishing Moisture Crème for normal/combination skin and Thera-skin Oil-free Hydrating Fluid if your skin on the oily side.

Step 5: To target the signs of aging around the eyes, try one of Thera-skin’s specialized eye creams. Use the Intensive Eye Therapy for fine lines or the Instant Eye Firming Gel for tired, puffy looking eyes. Apply a small drop under each eye and gently pat around the delicate eye area.

Keep in mind that everyone's skin is a little different. The great thing about Thera-skin's skin care regimes are that they can be adjusted to suit anyone's needs. Surprisingly, the prairies are usually drenched in sunshine, despite being covered in mountains of snow for half the year.

The pacific region of Canada is very special and unique to Canada. When most of the country is covered in snow and ice, the pacific remains lush and green. The area’s landmass consists of snow capped mountains and dense, mossy forests that outline the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean.

Canada’s Pacific is breathtaking, which is why Escents created a scent that is inspired by the area. Cedarwood and Pine combine creating a fresh, clean scent—just like the rainforests of British Columbia. Available in an Aroma Blend, Lotion, Wash and Bubble, Reed Diffuser and Handmade Soap. The Aroma Blend can be used in a diffuser or blended in one of Escents' unscented products and applied to the skin. The Artist-Da Vinci
Posted by megan on 9/24/2012 to Promotions

Sal Leonardo da Vinci was a man of many talents who was incredibly imaginative and curious about the world. His resume included: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. Some consider him the most talented person that has ever lived.

As a tribute to Da Vinci and his genius, Escents has created a scent that embodies his greatness. The packaging features his most famous painting, the Mona Lisa. The painting portrays a woman sitting staring calmly at the observer.  The Mona Lisa is noted for its life like qualities. For instance, the corners of her mouth and eyes are drawn slightly upward as if she is smiling to herself—it’s almost like she has a secret. Some theories suggest that she is smiling because she knows that she is with child.

Escents’ Da Vinci includes a combination of tension melting Cedarwood and spicy, earthy Myrrh, for a fresh and uplifting scent which provides mental clarity. To learn more about Escents' Da Vinci and the whole Artist line click here.

The Artist-Dali
Posted by megan on 9/20/2012 to Promotions

Salvador Dalí was a very popular Surrealist painter who also dabbled in film, sculpture, and photography. Dalí was known for his unusual dressing and eccentric behavior, but he is best known for his bizarre, dream-like paintings featuring elements such as dripping clocks and dangly legged elephants. One of his most famous paintings is called, The Persistence of Memory, which is supposed to take a deep look at space and time. "The soft watches are an unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time, a Surrealist meditation on the collapse of our notions of a fixed cosmic order".—Dawn Ades, 1981

Ignite and sharpen your mind with Escents’ Dalí. This scent is a mix of musky Patchouli and sweet, grassy Lavender. Like Dalí’s art, this Aroma Blend is both layered and complex. To learn more about Escents' Dali and the whole Artist line click here.

The Artist-Matisse
Posted by megan on 9/14/2012 to Promotions

Henri  Matisse was a 20th century artist known for his use of vivid colour and contribution to the development of the plastic arts (using plastic materials to mould). Matisse started off painting traditional landscapes and stills, but later adopted his unique style by being inspired by artists such as Nicolas Poussin, Edward Manet as well as Japanese art. But what really influenced Matisse is when he went to visit the Australian painter, John Peter Russell in Brittany. This meeting opened Matisse’s eyes to the world of Impressionism, and after this, his work flourished.

The painting featured on Escents' Matisse products is called, Bonheur de vivre also known as the Joy of Life.  The painting displays a brightly coloured landscape of trees, sea, meadows and sky, with nude men and women leisurely resting, dancing and taking quiet strolls. The Bonheur de vivre provides a great sense of peace, comfort and relaxation.  Henri Matisse was quoted saying, "What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject-matter, an art which could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters, for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue." —Matisse, 1908

Escents celebrates Matisse, by creating a scent that is romantic, fresh and uplifting. The floral Rose blends with uplifting Bergamot, creating a passionate blend that makes you truly appreciate life! To learn more about Escents' Matisse and the whole Artist line click here.

The Artist Line-Picasso
Posted by megan on 9/11/2012 to Promotions

Pablo Picasso was considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Throughout his life he completed a staggering 22000 pieces of artwork, ranging from sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, stage design and graphic arts. Picasso's art work was often a direct reflection of the political times in which he lived. For instance, when he painted the Guernica he was directly referencing the 1937 bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica, which took place during the Spanish Civil war.

Escents invites you to bring a piece of Picasso's art into your home with a calming scent inspired by the light palette and gentle strokes which he used during the infamous Blue Period. Invigorating Fir Needle and earthy Vetiver combine creating a simple, yet daring melancholy—much like Pablo Picasso's life's work. Click here to learn more about the Artist Line.
The Artist-Raphael
Posted by megan on 9/5/2012 to Promotions

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino was a well renowned artist of the Early Renaissance. During his short life, he became one of the most accomplished painters of his time. His work is regularly regarded for its composition, balance and harmony. Raphael’s career is often broken down into three distinct stages; his early career, which was influence by his teacher, Umbrian master Pietro Perugino, The Florentine period, where Raphael lived for four years, and finally when he was commissioned by the Pope to work in Rome to paint his personal library.

Escents invites you to celebrate Raphael’s achievements with this beautiful new scent that’s packaging features one of Raphael’s most famous masterpieces, The School of Athens. The towering fresco is believed to have been painted between 1510 and 1511. The painting represents all the greatest philosophers, mathematicians and scientists from the Greco-Roman world gathering together to share their ideas and gain knowledge from one another. Interestingly, the people portrayed in the painting lived at different times, but in this particular painting they are gathered together under one roof. Plato and Aristotle are the two main players positioned in the center of the painting. They are said to be representing two unique philosophies of the time. For instance, Plato is pointing towards the sky because he believes that the forever changing world that we see and know as reality is simply a distraction from a higher, greater, more beautiful reality. While Aristotle’s hand points downward representing his vision of the reality he sees in front of him—a reality that must be seen and touched.

As a tribute to Raphael’s great works, Escents has created a scent that is harmonious and balanced. Uniting the delicate, rich oil of Sandalwood with the creamy, floral oil of Ylang Ylang—creating a surprisingly energizing scent. Much like the Raphael’s paintings, the scent is detailed and thought provoking.  This combination of essential oils invokes a feeling of deep, languid calm that melts away anxiety, tension and stress. The Artist-Van Gogh
Posted by megan on 8/27/2012 to Promotions

Van Gogh was widely known for his influence on 20th century art. His post impressionist paintings are well regarded for their bold colour and realism. Interestingly, he did not start to paint until he was in his late twenties. Throughout his life he painted almost nine hundred paintings. Van Gogh was well known for his unique painting technique that was phrased, “Squigglism”. Squigglism is the use of quick, short strokes of bright colour. Unfortunately, Van Gogh struggled with a mental illness that would later lead him down a dark path. He died by a gunshot wound, which was thought to be self-inflicted. Some believe that Van Gogh is the most famous painter of all time, however, his paintings were never fully recognized until after his death.

Escents invites you to bring a piece of art into your home with the incredible new Artist Line. The packaging of the Van Gogh line features one of his most recognized paintings—Starry Night. Known for its captivating, vivid colour, Starry Night is not only beautiful, but the quite, peaceful town creates a sense of stability and comfort. The movement of the painting allows the observer’s eyes to dance along the painting; while the large, dark structure (thought to be a mountain or a bush) anchors the eye, creating unbelievable depth.

In celebration of Van Gogh’s tremendous impact on the art world, Escents has created a scent that embodies the feeling and emotion that Van Gogh brought to all of his paintings. Just like the profound beauty and depth of Van Gogh’s artwork, the scent mingles the spicy, peppery oil of Elemi with the fresh, energizing oil of Spearmint—creating a scent that is truly indulgent. Spearmint provides a sense of well-being and balance, and is great for treating headaches and nervous stress. Elemi is useful when treating respiratory problems and holds amazing anti-aging properties. Click here to learn more about the Artist Line.

Almond Latte Collection: Good For You, Good For Them
Posted by megan on 6/29/2012 to Promotions
At Escents Aromatherapy's head office, CEO, Jacqui MacNeill, is always looking for ways to create beautiful, healing products that make people feel good. As an Escents employee, you can often find yourself being pulled into a circle with Jacqui, to smell and discuss a new Aroma Blend that she's been working on. So when Jacqui told the Escents team about her idea for a line that uses 20% shea butter, we were all thrilled! This summer, we're launching a product that is not only natural and luxurious, it also gives back to the world.

The Almond Latte Collection is of one Jacqui's greatest creations. Made with up to 20% shea butter; harvested by the women of the Léo Co-op in Burkina Faso, Africa. The Léo CO-OP is a fair trade organization that makes sure that the Léo Union workers are able to earn more money for their hard work, giving them the ability to reinvest in as well as improve their communities. The Léo Co-op stands by their moto, "Good For You, Good For Them" by helping to increase the revenue the Burkina Faso women make from the production of the shea butter.

The Almond Latte Collection consists of a shea butter créme shower cream, an ultra rich handmade soap and hydrating shea body butter. The collection is extremely moisturizing and contains carrot seed and orange essential oils. The carrot seed oil works to relieve stress, while stimulating and rejuvenating the skin, and the orange oil has an anti-ageing, skin softening effect. Each product contains aloe vera and up to 20% shea butter, which helps to heal and strengthen dry, damaged skin. The handmade soap contains coffee grounds from Oso Negro and Kicking Horse coffee, which are both local British Columbian fair trade coffee producers. The coffee grounds help to exfoliate skin as the soap moisturizes and nourishes it. To top it off, these products are scented with all natural almond extract, creating a smell that is simply divine! The Almond Latte Collection not only makes you feel great on the the outside, but also makes you feel great on the inside.

Check back next week for more information about the history and origins of shea butter.

Love for Natural Escents Products
Posted by megan on 4/5/2012 to Products
Melissa, from Newfoundland, posted a blog about how much loves our Organic Handmade Soaps. It was such a nice compliment, we though we'd share. We love how she describes, "the soapy goodness":)

"I decided to try out the Escents Organics Handmade Soap that we carry here in the shop. I  most typically buy my soap from our local soap shop Tval Skincare but, change is always good.  This soap is still made in Canada. They’re based out of Vancouver.  They have a whole history of the line on the website in the about us section but I’ll try and summarize in brief.

Escents has based it’s line on plant-based eco-friendly production that strives for the healthy promotion of symmetry between body and soul. The company uses the principles of aromatherapy to create unique blends that make for great suds time in the shower.

Now that you’ve got an idea about the company I’m going to review the Matcha Tea Soap!

As you can see in the picture to the left, the packaging is minimal. I loved that. It’s nice  not to have a whole pile of wrapping in the trash when all I want to do is use the soap to scrub clean.  It also allows you to smell the forest for the trees. When you pick this soap up the first thing you want to do is to put it to your nose.

You can really see someone hand cutting the soap into these nice square cakes for us here in Newfoundland. The packaging tells you a little about the scent, the company, and other important information like where it comes from (Vancouver) and that it’s biodegradable, not tested on animals, paraben free, mineral oil free, SLS, and phosphate free. Most soaps are full of this harsh stuff!

It’s nice to see right on the label that it’s safe for people of all ages (kids too) so you don’t have worry about different soaps for different folks (unless you want to). This vegan soap is great for awakening your senses. It has both mind focusing and inner peace instilling essential oils to get you feeling great. It’s also got some cornmeal to help the exfoliation process of your skin’s natural rejuvenation.

When I brought it in my shower I was pleased that it fit perfectly on those tiny, slippery ledges that the shower fitting wizards created for maximum soap-dropping. It was quick to suds up in the shower with my washcloth, the scent exploded into my shower with a clean refreshing scent that was great for first thing in the morning. Though I didn’t find it too strong for the small sized bathroom. The scent is comparable to any of your usual bubble bath smells, not overpowering.

With all the soapy goodness created by the combination of soap and washcloth I was able to clean up every inch in a lickety-split fashion. Lots of soap, little sticky after soap left on the body. I tend to dry out using commercial soaps like Dove or Ivory, serious alligator skin! So, that’s why I initially switched to handmade soaps. This particular brand definitely did not disappoint. I even went without moisturizing with coconut oil to give it the true test. I’m proud to say I’ve been itch free!

So, my conclusion as to whether you should try out this line of soaps is that you should! If it was ranked out of 5 stars this product would get a definite 4 out of 5!"

Jacqui's Favorite Essential Oils for the Fall
Posted by Jacqui MacNeill on 10/7/2011 to Aromatherapy 101
Each season has its ups and downs and we notice these most at the onset of each season. The fall is represented by transformation and harvest. It is a time we feel thankful for all of nature's bounty, whether this comes in the form of harvest feasts or simply the beauty of it all as we walk in the woods and appreciate the colour changes in the leaves.

Many people find that the change in season brings about its own unique physical and emotional quirks for people making its impact strongest at the onset. To help make sure that we're making the most of the fall season it's good to nip these things in the bud so to speak. Below are some health solutions using essential oils to help you manage issues related to seasonal change.

1. Low Immunity. While winter is widely regarded the "Cold & Flu" season, our immune systems often get caught off guard when while our bodies acclimatize to the change in temperature that comes with fall leaving us more vulnerable to illness. Try to maintain your activity levels and healthy eating habits as the season changes to help keep your immune system strong.  See our essential oil health solutions giving your immune system an extra boost. As the cooler temperatures make me feel like nesting inside, I find I am using my diffuser more and more, with our Pure Imunity Blend.  I also use this blend in my lotion as it's a great way to boost my immune system - my kids bring home so many germs from school!  If I do start feeling under the weather or just run down, I roll our Respiration Blend throughout the day, it always helps to make me breathe better.

2. Allergies. Depending on where you live and what you're allergic too, the fall can be a bad season for allergies, oftentime worse than spring. If you suffer from fall allergies, let someone else do the raking, mowing, composting, etc and stay indoors. Avoid hanging clothing or bedding outdoors so you don't expose them to pollen and mold. One of our store Managers was telling me that she uses Niaouli in her Arometherapy Pendant (the ones that appeared on Dragon's Den!) as a great way to reduce affects of allergies.  I would also recommend burning Niaouli in a diffuser at bedtime or even adding it to your shower gel so the benefits can really get into your system. See our essential oil health solutions for allergies.

3. Fatigue. With the gradual decrease in daylight, people often find themselves more and more physically and mentally fatigued as fall sets in.  People also start to "hibernate" more, decreasing the physical activity that helps keep energy levels up. Of course, you should try to maintain your fitness regime, but aromatherapy can also help, so here are tips for dealing with fatigue using essential oils.  Most of our Escents staffers have a diffuser in their offices, and many of us use Rosemary in them to combat the mid-afternoon slump, or use it in a lotion or wash as a perfect way to increase energy. A quick trick I often use when I'm driving and needing to perk up is to roll Headache Relief on the back of my neck - honestly, there aren't many things that Headache Relief doesn't work on; there must be a reason it's been our best seller for nearly 20 years!

4. Depression. The decrease in daylight hours also tends to make depression worse if you're prone to it. As with fatigue and low immunity, maintaining activity levels helps, but also try these suggestions if you're are particularly prone to seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.)Neroli is my "go-to" essential oil when I am feeling down; I use it in my lotion and I also rub a few drops on my wrists or under my nose.

What essential oils do you find most useful or appealing in the fall? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Behold, Bright Blossom Essential Oil Blend
Posted by Admin on 8/15/2011 to Products
We invite you to try our exclusive collection for the bath, body, and home.

Be transported to a wild flower garden.  An rquisute combination of Palmarosa and Lemon undercut by peppery basil and sweet pea create an aromatic blend that is reminiscent of lazy spring days.  Feel pampered with every day with this floral, zesty combination.  It's a great aroma from morning to night; sophisticated and alluring for the evening, yet clean, fresh and perfect during the day.

Its origins
We wanted to create a blend that was green and light, but with a hint of floral.  Inspired by the delicate wild flower fields of Northern Canada, the idea was to represent the beauty and elegance of florals without being too heady.  We wanted to keep it light.  The result was a surprising, sensuous, yet fresh bouquet.

Phalate and DPG free.  Made using essential oils and natural botanicals, we recommend this aroma for the body or for home scenting.  Like all of our combinations, we believe that scent is the essence of life, to be worn and experienced and treasured.
A Thera-Skin Update on Monica
Posted by Escents on 7/28/2011 to Natural Skin Care
As our Thera-Skin Contest draws to a close this weekend, we thought it was a great time to check in with our skin care tester, Monica.  You first met Monica back in June, when we recommended a skin care regime to address her specific skin issues and she bravely let us post a picture of her naked face as a "before" to any Thera-Skin use.

Here's what she reported to us:

My two month (and counting) relationship with Escents...

Ok, I have to admit I never really believed in the value of "quality skin care products" as evidenced by my collection of crappy creams and lotions picked out of the clearance bin from the drug store. But I confess I am now a convert to Thera-Skin. Two months ago I started out with a whole crop of stress-related blemishes, oily skin and enlarged pores.  Now, I am happy to report that my skin is less oily and my pores have shrunk and I haven't seen a blemish since.  There has been a threat of one or two since but I have just applied a little extra toner and/or Instant Calm Ultra Complex and poof! Gone!!

The product feels great on the skin, very light and natural.  I love the Visibly Moist Toner - it truly does feel like it's adding moisture - not drying my skin like the old Bonne Bell 10-0-6 - remember that stuff?  The Multi-Vitamin Purifying Face Wash and Moisture Replenishing Cream are the perfect weight - light but effective. And I love the Crystal Clarity Microdermabrasion Creme - makes me feel like I have a new face!  The best part - these Escents products do cost more than my 99c bin stuff but they last for ages!  Well over two months and I've only used half the face wash, same with the moisturizer and the toner has barely moved!  I'm now a devoted Escents-aholic.

Monica reported that after using the products for only a few weeks, she was told that she looked radiant and that her skin looked more firm and taut - and the person remarking didn't know she was involved in our little test!

Here again, is Monica before using Thera-Skin:

And here she is later on:

Because we'll be too busy enjoying the sun to pick a winner for our Thera-Skin contest, we've extended the deadline to enter until Monday, August 1st at midnight.  To enter, either email sales@escentsaromatherapy.com or simply log into our site and leave a review of a Thera-Skin product - tell us how it's made a difference in your skin and what compliments you've heard about how amazing you look!  If you have photos of your radiance, we'd love to see them!

Good luck!  We'll be choosing our winners next week - stay tuned!

Introducing Our New Natural Deodorants
Posted by Jacqui MacNeill on 7/20/2011 to Wellness
I'm pleased to announce the introduction of our new natural deodorants to Escents' product collection. We've put a lot of thought into the development of this product and are very proud of the formula we've created, one that relies on vegetable protein in combination with pure essential oils rather than aluminum chlorhydrate or other aluminum compounds.

Vegetable Protein Deodorant Formula vs. Aluminum Formulas

A number of medical studies suggest that if aluminum enters your blood, it can be absorbed and accumulated in the body. According to some research there may be an association between aluminum and Alzheimer's disease. For this reason many people are choosing to avoid formulas that contain aluminum.

The vegetable protein base used in Escents' deodorant formula is based on a bio-fermentation technology from yeast, and contains enzymes such as hydrolases, de-Esterases, reductiveases, and oxidases, which are said to promote the conversion of a wide range of malodorous substances to their heavier molecule weight, non-odourous salt forms. It neutralizes odours caused by perspiration, human waste, vomit, cigarette smoke, food, mildew, pets and depilatories.

Essential Oil Blends in Our Deodorants

We have chosen two essential oil blends to be featured in our deodorants for their natural properties that will enhance the deodorant effects, Summer and Renewal. Our Summer Essential Oil Blend Natural Deodorant contains Tea Tree, known for its antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Our Renewal Essential Oil Blend Natural Deodorant contains Eucalyptus, known for its antiseptic qualites.

How to Use Our Natural Deodorants

Our natural deodorants can not only be used under your arms. They can also be used on your feet or anywhere else you want to fight odour naturally. One day after walking around in sandals all day I found that both my feet and sandals stank. I tried the new formula on my feet and noticed that not only did my feet stop smelling, the sandals I was wearing also stopped smelling. At that moment, I knew we had developed something great!

Our natural deodorants coming in a standard size and a travel size for when you're on the go. Give either one a try and let us know how it works out for you! :)
Introducing Summer, Our Newest Essential Oil Blend

We all love our new Summer blend here at Escents, so much so that we have gone ahead and launched it in our newest creation, a totally natural Enzyme Deodorant, in addition to a Hand & Body Lotion, Wash & Bubble, and Handmade Soap. I am thrilled to finally share this incredibly fresh, engaging unisex blend with all our fans.

Summer

One thing is for certain: Summer is Mother Nature in all her glory, vibrant and alive. Summer is a blissful escape from our daily stresses that warms and comforts our souls. This is the inspiration behind my latest creation, our Summer Essential Oil Blend, with top notes of Rosemary and Lemon.

The Rosemary, with its fresh, natural herb scent, entrances and revitalizes the mind. Cleansing, refreshing Lemon adds an element of clarity and energy to the blend. And who doesn't love a tall, glass of cool lemonade on a hot summer day?

I was curious what other people said summer smells like to them and looked to Yahoo Answers for inspiration and found these replies:

"Fresh mowed green grass. French Fries at the Fair. Cotton Candy. Puppy Breath. Sand and the beach."

"The fresh smell of the morning dew. The sweet smell of flowers blooming in the fresh hot summer air. Hearing and smelling the fresh pollening of the Honey suck's growing across the fence and seeing Hummingbirds sucking the sweet nectar out of the Honey sucks. Animal dancing with the joy of summer and new Born's being born."

"The smell of homework being ripped apart, the clean aroma of a mowed lawn, the yummy flavor of Caprisun juice (and popsicles), the beach, hotdogs, sweaty friends suggesting crazy ideas, and FREEDOM."

"Being a cattle man, I love the smell of a newborn calf... the smell of fresh cut hay..the smell of the sun as it hits the wild grass in the field."

"Freshly mowed grass, food on the barbeque, apple blossoms, the fragrance after a rain."

"It smells like happiness even though people are still in war, and fighting. Just watch the clouds and let everything around you drift away.

"Lilacs, strawberries, and sweaty sex."

"Banana scented suntan lotion...peace."

Now over to you; What does summer smell like to you? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

From Treating Acne to Getting ZZZs: The Versatility of Lavender Oil
Posted by Jacqui MacNeill on 6/21/2011 to Wellness

With the onset of summer upon us, lavender is in full bloom and is ready for harvest for the creation of Lavender Essential Oil, one of the most popular and versatile of all the essential oils. With a scent that is soft and floral, fresh and herbaceous, yet with a touch of sweetness, it blends well with a variety of other essential oils, making it a popular choice for use in perfume. It also has a long history of use for wellness and healing purposes due to its versatility for treating a wide variety of healing properties. It also can be used directly on skin without diluting it, unlike most other essential oils.

Lavender Oil in Escents

You'll also find it in a variety of calming essential oil blends, including RelaxationSootheBlue Water, and Lavender Meadow. Meet Monica: A Thera-Skin Success Story
Posted by Escents on 6/3/2011 to Natural Skin Care

Escents Aromatherapy staffers have all happily adopted using our Thera-Skin line since it debuted last summer; we regularly share stories and photos of our young-looking skin with our spa estheticians, thanking them for making us look so great.

Many of our customers find us through our website, so recognizing it's sometimes difficult to know what to use on your skin, we've added some tools to help youdetermine your skin type and get on the right track to take care of your skin with only a few minutes a day.

We are also proud to give you a real-life example ofThera-Skin in action! Monica is a loyal Escents Aromatherapy fan who was suffering from various skin issues. Here's what she shared with us:

I think my skin is primarily oily although sometimes there are dry areas. In the morning it feels slightly oily. After washing with just water, probably pretty normal (I never wash with just water so not sure!) but I think would feel tight if I didnt moisturize. It definitely feels tight after washing with cleanser until I moisturize. Breakouts are usually linked to my cycle and I get one or two per cycle every other month or so, although I was recently subjected to a severe breakout, most likely due to stress. The doctor wasnt sure if it was acne or rosacea.

I have pretty large pores which I hate and would love to be able to do even a little something about. I have freckles and burn moderately easily but wear sunscreen daily. I would not describe my skin as sensitive.

Over the next several weeks, Monica will use a skin care regime of Thera-Skinproducts specifically chosen to address her concerns. We'll follow her as the appearance of her skin changes and present a final Before and After photo for you to see.

Here she is, bravely posing, with a completely naked face:

Rajanne, our Head Esthetician, recommended that she use these products:

To cleanse

Muti-Vitamin Purifying Face Wash - this will address her combination skin, hydrating the dry areas. Her skin feeling dry after washing indicates that she may have been using the wrong products previously.

To tone

Visibly Moist Facial Toner - this will both hydrate her skin and prepare it to absorb her moisturizer

To moisturize

Moisture Replenishing Face Cream - this is a light moisturizer that is great for combination skin. We also provided her with Continuous Moisture Cream, which is another great option.

To exfoliate

Crystal Clarity Microdermabrasion Cream - this will be used once or twice a week and will help with sun damage and acne scarred skin; it reveals new skin and minimizes pores as well.

To treat

Instant Calm Ultra Skin Treatment - this will help with rosacea (using it twice per day) and sunburns, and will also help control signs of irritation.

Monica has been using her products for 4 full days, and here's her feedback so far:

Ok, have used the products twice now - even after the first use last night - wow!!! My skin felt so unbelievably soft and smooth. I was truly surprised. Didn't honestly think it would have an effect so soon. I'm excited for the longer term results!!!

I tried the micro-dermabrasion stuff and I had no idea how good my skin could feel!

First impressions are very good. The products are pleasant to use, smell good and feel wonderful on the skin. After applying the moisturizer my skin feels like velvet. So far not seeing a big difference in my skin texture or appearance but its only been 4 days. Hoping to see more as time passes. I also like that a little bit of product goes a long way.

We invite you to follow Monica as she uses Thera-Skin to keep her skin healthy and glowing.

We'd love to hear from you! Send your before and after photos from using Thera-Skin and be entered to win - check out the detailshere. We're giving away Thera-Skin prize packs, Escents Aromatherapy shopping sprees and a glamorous weekend in downtown Vancouver! Send your entries to sales@escentsaromatherapy.com.
