Aromatherapy Using Essential Oils as Insect Repellents

Nowadays people are moving toward deet-free insect repellents. Studies have shown that exposure to deet has negative effects on health including: rashes, skin irritation, nausea, headaches, dizziness and difficulty concentrating. Pediatricians recommend limiting childrens exposure to deet as well. Essential oils offer a natural, pleasant smelling alternative to deet-based insect repellents.

Blend Your Own Essential Oil Insect Repellents

A number of essential oils have been identified as being effective as insect repellents. They include the following: citronella, lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus, geranium, rosemary, patchouli, peppermint, tea tree, rosewood, sandalwood, and cedarwood. Our Outdoor Shield insect repelling products are a good place to start for protection. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try blending your own insect spray by adding any combination of the above essential oils into our Unscented Spray Mist. You can also add these oils to an aromatherapy diffuser to help keep bugs out of the area. If you don't want to blend your own products, our Headache Relief Aromatherapy Roll-on, with peppermint and lavender, is a good alternative.

Using Body Products with Insect Repellent Essential Oils

If you know you're going to be in an area with lots of insects, you can help keep them away by using hair and body products with essential oils that repel them. Any products in our Lavender Provence Bath and Body Collection are great as they contain 100% pure lavender oil. Our Stimulate Shampoo & Conditioner (with peppermint and rosemary) and our Balance Shampoo & Conditioner (with geranium and rosemary) are good choices for hair care.
