The itching and swelling caused by non-poisonous insect bites can easily be relieved using particular essential oils. Essential oils can also be used to prevent insect bites in the first place. Read about essential oil solutions for insect repellent.
Topical Essential Oil Treatment of Insect Bites
The swelling and pain that may be experienced when you first get an insect bite can be treated using 1-2 drops of lavender oil or tea tree oil. Both can be used directly on the bite. Alternatively, you can use chamomile, rosewood, eucalyptus, bergamot, ylang ylang, sandalwood, or peppermint, but any of these must be blended with a carrier oil (10 drops per 30ml of oil) first before application. To further reduce swelling, combine with a cold compress.
Our Headache Relief Roll-on, with its combination of lavender and peppermint oils, is great for spot-treating both swelling and itchiness from insect bites. For larger areas, try using our Revitializing Foot and Leg Mist, containing peppermint and eucalyptus, anywhere on the body where you have insect bites.
Relieving Insect Bites in the Bath
If you have a lot of insect bites and would like to hit them all at once, try any combination of the above essential oils in a bath. You can add them directly to your bath (10 15 drops) or blend them into a carrier oil so that the essential oils cling to your skin even after youre out of the tub. Soak for 15 minutes for best results. Any of our Lavender bath or body lotion products are also good choices.
