Athlete's foot, a common condition for people with active jobs or lifestyles, can be easily treated with common essential oils. Try the simple remedies listed below to relieve the fungal infection and the itching and irritation associated with athlete’s foot and to prevent future breakouts.
Essential Oil Foot Soak for Athlete's Foot
Run very warm water into a small tub, adding essential oils by the drop into the water flow (10 drops eucalyptus oil, 10 drops tea tree oil, 5 drops peppermint oil). When the tub is 2/3 full, submerge your feet up to the ankles for 15 – 20 minutes or until water is no longer warm. During your foot soak, you can also use a pumice stone and/or our Revitalizing Foot Scrub to get rid of dead or callused skin. Follow up with Revitalizing Foot & Leg Lotion.
Essential Oil Astringent Topical Treatment of Athlete’s Foot
Daily use of this astringent recipe will help soothe infected areas. Add 12 drops tea tree oil, 8 drops geranium oil, 4 drops lemon oil and 4 drops clove oil to a dry, airtight 3 oz bottle. Top up with 2-3 oz of apple cider vinegar. To combine, place bottle between your palms and roll back and forth. Mix this way before each use. Store in a cool, dry place. To apply, add a few drops of the astringent to a cotton ball and swab affected area daily.
Essential Oil Foot Powder to Prevent Athlete's Foot
Add 1/4 cup of cornstarch into a ziploc plastic bag. Add 14 drops tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil, 8 drops of geranium oil, 5 drops of cypress oil, and 3 drops peppermint oil directly to the corn starch. Close the bag and toss the powder thoroughly. Dust feet with mixture at least once daily, and shake into socks or shoes before long wear or physical activity. Store in an airtight jar or container.
Other essential oils known to be helpful against athlete's foot include: clary sage and lavender or any of the essential oils used in the above recipes. You can try creating your own blends of foot soaks or foot powders using any of these.
